Mercer University Degrees and Programs

Mercer University appears in our ranking of  50 Great Affordable Colleges in the South.

Students will enroll in a program offered by one of 12 different colleges and schools when they pursue a major at Mercer University in Georgia. Divisions include the College of Liberal Arts, the Eugene W. Stetson School of Business & Economics, the School of Engineering, and the Tift College of Education.

Students may also take classes from the Townsend School of Music, the Walter F. George School of Law, the James & Carolyn McAfee School of Theology, Penfield College, the School of Medicine, and the College of Pharmacy, which is located in Atlanta. The university also hosts the Georgia Baptist College of Nursing and the College of Health Professions.

Business is the most popular major at Mercer University, and programs are available in a variety of formats and levels. For example, graduate students can enroll in an evening Master of Business Administration program at the Atlanta or Macon campus, as well as a traditional, full-time MBA at the Macon campus. The university also offers an Online Master of Business Administration, a two-year MBA, and a combined degree that awards an MBA and a Master of Accountancy.

Another popular area of study at the university is theology, and students may enroll in the professional program or one of the combined degree programs. Professional programs include the Master of Divinity, Master of Theological Studies, the Doctor of Ministry, and the Master of Arts in Christian Ministry. Combined degree programs, which are available at the theology campus in Atlanta, include the Master of Divinity and MBA program and the Master of Divinity with a Master of Science in Organizational Leadership.

The third-most-popular area for students at Mercer University is engineering, and students may choose from many concentrations. Specializations for undergraduate engineering include biomedical, electrical, industrial, mechanical, environmental, and computer engineering. There are additional areas of specialization available at the graduate level that include engineering management, software engineering, environmental systems, and technical management.

Students who don’t live in Georgia may be eligible to enroll in distance learning programs through online learning. The university also offers many of its online programs in a hybrid format where students only need to attend classes on campus a few times each year. Online programs include a Bachelor of Business Administration in Accounting, a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice Leadership, and a Master of Education in Early Childhood Education.

Graduate degrees available online include a Master of Science in Technical Communication Management, a Master of Science in Software Systems, and the Online MBA program. Some of the hybrid format degrees available are the Doctor of Ministry program, the degree in organizational leadership, and the teacher leadership graduate program.

About Mercer University

Established in 1833, Mercer University is located in Macon, Georgia and is a private university with around 8.600 students. The university is comprised of 12 schools and colleges in business, education, continuing & professional studies, theology, pharmacy, health professions, nursing, medicine, law, music, engineering, and liberal arts.

In addition to its main campus in Macon, the university also has a graduate and professional degree campus in Atlanta and the campus that houses the School of Medicine in Savannah. The school’s official colors are black and orange, and the sports teams are nicknamed the Bears. Teams play in NCAA Division I games in the Southern Conference.

Mercer University Accreditation Details

Regional accreditation for Mercer University comes from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges. The last time the school received regional accreditation was in 2015. Students can request additional information on the school’s accreditation by contacting the provost of the university. Many of the university’s programs are also accredited by national agencies.

The American Psychological Association has accredited the Doctor of Psychology (PsyD) program on a contingency basis until 2023. The Accreditation Board for Engineering & Technology – Computing Accreditation Commission has accredited the Bachelor of Science in Computer Science. The Association of Theological Schools has accredited the Doctor of Ministry and three of the graduate degrees in theology.

Mercer University Application Requirements

First-year students who want to apply to Mercer University will have their academic record, standardized test scores, extracurricular activities, personal essay, and letters of recommendation examined by the admissions office at Mercer University. Students must make sure that they take four units of English, four units of math, three units of laboratory science, three units of social science, and two units of foreign language.

The average freshman class applicant has an SAT score of 1290, an average ACT score of 28, and a 3.92 average academic GPA. Students who want to apply to any of the school’s graduate programs will need to speak with the director of their chosen program to ensure that they are aware of all application requirements.

Tuition and Financial Aid

Mercer University tuition for undergraduate students is $36,594.00 per year which equals $1,220.00 per credit. Graduate programs vary based on the program student enters. The graduate program in music is $720 per credit hour, the engineering program in Macon is $918 per credit hour, and the Master of Business Administration program varies from $755 to $818 per credit.

For students enrolled in law school, the cost per year is $38,416 and the cost per year for the Doctor of Medicine program is $42,286 per year. There are also various costs per year for other graduate programs. For example, the Masters in Family Therapy is $960 per credit hour, and the Masters of Preclinical Science is $762 per hour. Students may also need to pay some fees like an audit fee of $150 per course and an internship fee of $200.

Students are encouraged to submit their FASFA form whether they need financial aid or can pay for college without assistance. Submitting the form will help students determine whether they are eligible for scholarships and grants, as well as traditional student loans from the Federal Direct Loan Program.
