About Saint Mary’s University of Minnesota

SMU was founded in 1912 as one of the six Catholic Lasallian schools in the United States. The Lasallian tradition is a Christian religious tradition of education that has its roots in France of the 18th century. Lasallian education puts an emphasis on inclusive self-empowerment that relies on family support and communal pedagogy. In 1933, SMU became accredited to award bachelor’s degrees by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools.
