About UAB

Birmingham lacked any institutions of higher learning until the 1960s. Citing the need for a school of higher learning, the University of Alabama decided to add a new campus in the city. Then known as the Birmingham Extension Center, this school originally held classes in a small downtown building and had a small number of students. As its enrollment grew following the establishment of the University of Alabama School of Medicine in the city, the university looked at building a new campus. By the middle of the 1960s, the school established itself as its own university and adopted the name the University of Alabama in Birmingham, which later became the University of Alabama at Birmingham.

The campus now consists of more than 80 blocks and dozens of buildings that range from campus housing for students to learning centers and libraries. It appeared on the list of top schools in the nation created by Forbes, Washington Monthly and U.S. and World Report, and AWRU also ranked it as one of the top global colleges. Sometimes called UAB, the university established a distance learning program early on that allowed students to complete classes year round from home. Its distance learning program is now an eLearning program that offers online classes for students.
